Bodega Marañones

D.O. Vinos de Madrid – Sierra de Gredos Mountain Range

The mosaic of vineyards and wines of Bodega Marañones reflect the appreciation of the appellation's history. A heritage filled with castles and monasteries, stories of kings, and commoners, tales that hold lessons around the journey of a land, its people and wine. A past that contributes to the region's authentic representation in today's vintages.

Bodega Marañones' landscape spans from the top of the Sierra de Gredos mountain range to the valley's foothills. The combination of geology, climate, and soils provides conditions ideal for vine cultivation. The high altitude, old vines, local varieties, and fractured granite soils lend to the diverse characteristics of the individual plots. Bodega Marañones practices biodynamic agriculture and organic principles as part of their winemaking philosophy.

Altitude  2133 – 2789 feet

Vineyards reside mainly on the north side, which, given the slope of the plots, facilitates optimal sun exposure. The mountain ranges protect the vineyards from the cold winds and frosts of the north and allow for better ventilation. Gentle and constant wind flow, influenced by the Mediterranean climate, allows a natural aerial "cleaning" of the vines, making them less susceptible to fungal diseases.

The natural disintegration of granite is the basis of the vineyards of Marañones. The composition of the soil is characterized by its acidity levels of silica and low organic matter, which provide a high mineral expression to the grape.

Marañones 2020

The Garnacha vines of this wine are 50-70 years old and are known as the signature plantings of the winery. They reside at an altitude of 2625 feet on the hillside of Sierra de Gredos facing north. The soil consists of three types of granite - white granite, brown and pink, along with a mixture of gneiss and schist rock.

The 100 percent Garnacha expresses itself fully, both in the nose and mouth, with flavors of blackthorn, a sensation of fleshy fruit retaining a slightly crispy texture. Experience a full silkiness and a richness from quartz is noticeable in the texture, length, finesse, elegance and floral element of the wine.

Picarana 2020

Picarana is 100 percent Albillo Real local grape. There is very little Albillo Real left in Spain; it is mostly found in Gredos, where it thrives in the hot sun. The name Picarana is a tribute to a bird in the area and reflects the union of land, environment, and wildlife.

This variety is called "early" in the area because it is the first to sprout and grows in small clusters that turn golden immediately. It is a white wine with a lot of density in the mouth due to its high glycerin content.

A wine with a smoky and spicy twist. Intertwined with notes of fennel and white flowers and a palate with hints of granite. The finish is marked with salinity, which is very tasty and long.

30,000 Maravedíes 2020

The 30,000 Maravedíes name comes from the price paid to buy the whole region from the monks who fostered the cultivation of the vines. This is a village wine produced from 90% Garnacha and 10% local grapes.  The grapes are harvested from different plots: Dehesa, Vista Alegre, Manzanillo and Marañones.

This wine delivers a structure led by the minerality, followed by floral aromas, length, and a basket of red fruit.
